Diet for rotavirus infection in a child and adult
Rotavirus infection is an infectious disease characterized by a strong bowel disorder - diarrhea. The danger of this disease is that it can lead to dehydration and death of a person in just a few days. Therefore, with rotavirus infection it is necessary to fight from the very first minutes of its manifestation.
Unfortunately, there are no drugs that could stop diarrhea and destroy the infection. For its treatment, a systematic diet is used. Diet with rotavirus infection should be observed throughout the treatment and after it for 2 to 3 days.
How to recognize rotavirus infection?
It is impossible to independently recognize rotavirus infection, since it has practically all the same symptoms as banal food poisoning. This is diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, dizziness, etc. Infection is determined only in the laboratory.
How is treatment carried out?
Treatment of rotavirus infection begins with the removal from the diet of dairy and fermented milk products, as they cause fermentation in the intestine and create favorable conditions for the development of bacteria. And this can lead to a sharp deterioration in the patient's well-being.
As a rule, in the presence of infection, the appetite of a person is completely absent, so one should not make him eat. It is necessary to provide him with an abundant drink. In this case, it should occur every 10 to 15 minutes in a small amount.
To not induce vomiting, during this period you need to eat small doses. It is recommended to divide the usual portion into 3-4 parts and consume only one part for one meal.
If the patient does not lose his appetite, then during this period it is useful to feed rice porridge, but without adding oil, sugar, salt and other flavor additives. Between meals, you need to take breaks in 1,5-2 hours.
What foods should be excluded from the diet?
The diet for rotavirus infection in a child and adult has the same menu. It does not include products such as:
- dairy and sour-milk products;
- fatty meat and fish;
- fatty meat and fish broth;
- raw vegetables and fruits;
- vegetable and butter;
- cakes and fresh bread;
- barley and pearl barley;
- smoked meat and salinity.
All these products should be completely excluded from the patient's diet. All of them negatively affect the work of the intestines and can lead to an even worse deterioration of well-being.
What can I eat during the treatment of rotavirus infection?
In the presence of strong and frequent liquid stools, it is allowed to eat only manna and rice porridges on water, crackers, jelly, loose black tea without sugar, boiled chicken without skin.
When the stool is slightly normalized and does not occur as often as at the beginning of the disease, such foods as:
- vegetable soups can be included in the patient's diet;
- soups on secondary chicken broth;
- rice, buckwheat and semolina porridge;
- mashed potatoes;
- boiled vegetables( carrots, potatoes, cauliflower);
- honey, jam.
Then, gradually, seasonal vegetables, fruits and berries can be introduced into the diet. After recovery, the diet should continue for several more days and only after that you can gradually enter the diet of the usual food.
Rotavirus infection is a disease in the absence of treatment which causes a greater threat to life. Therefore, as soon as you or your child have a loose stool, accompanied by sharp pains in the abdomen, immediately seek help from a specialist and immediately start to follow a diet.
