Scoliosis of the thoracic spine: treatment and special exercises

Scoliosis of the thoracic spine has been one of the most malignant deformities due to rapid progression. The vertex of deformation in this form is found on 7-9 thoracic vertebrae. Depending on the direction of the primary arc of curvature, right-sided and left-thoracic thoracic scoliosis are distinguished.

Left-sided curvature proceeds without malignant course. Even the compensatory arches are less pronounced than with right-sided scoliosis. With adequate treatment, the process can be stopped. Right-sided scoliosis refers to one of the severe forms of the disease, in which pathological processes in the vertebrae occur very quickly. If not treated at the initial stages, then disability is inevitable.

In most cases, the primary scoliotic arch of the thoracic region is directed to the right side. As a rule, above and below this arc compensatory arcs of curvature are formed. Progression of the disease leads to the formation of a costal hump.

Causes of scoliosis:

  • Wrong development of vertebrae, muscles, ligaments.
  • Deformation of vertebral bodies.

Complications of

Scoliosis of the thoracic region provokes curvature of other parts of the spine. The thorax strongly deforms, thus there are problems with respiratory and cardiovascular system. At the first degree, changes in the chest are almost imperceptible. The angle of curvature increases with scoliosis of the 2nd degree and reaches 25 °.

Progressing, the disease deforms the trunk. The angle of curvature can reach 500. A heavy 4 degree leads to disability of the patient. In addition to problems with the musculoskeletal system, the patient develops cardiac and respiratory failure.

Combined thoracic scoliosis has two primary arcs of curvature. One arc is in the upper thoracic region, the second - in the lower thoracic or lumbar spine. In this case, develops thoracolumbar scoliosis.

Treatment of

The treatment of scoliosis is complex and includes the following activities:

  1. Therapeutic exercises and swimming
  2. Correction of muscle tone with massage
  3. Wearing corsets
  4. Physiotherapeutic procedures
  5. Restriction of loads on the spine
  6. Medication therapy
  7. Treatment of concomitant symptoms.

Treatment of the deformity of the spine consists of several links:

  1. Mobilization
  2. Correction
  3. Stabilization.

The main signs of scoliosis

In addition, the treatment is aimed at eliminating the symptoms of pathological changes in organs and systems. A complex and important task is not mobilization and correction, but stabilization of the spine, which is aimed at improving the musculoskeletal apparatus. This determines success in the fight against the disease.

Correction of deformation without measures that provide stabilization of the spine, almost always lead to zero result and further progression of the disease.

Structural deformation of the vertebrae needs to be corrected and treated throughout the period of growth of the vertebrae. Only in this case, a complete cure is possible.

LFK with scoliosis

An obligatory condition is the inclusion in the complex of medical measures orthopedic correction and exercise therapy.

The rationale for the application of physiotherapy exercises is the relationship between the formation of the osteo-tie apparatus of the spine and the state of the muscular system. Complexes of exercises contribute to the formation of a muscular corset, which can then hold the spine, and also provide stabilization of the spine and stop the progression of the disease.

LFK consists of the following exercises:

  1. Breathing
  2. Special: symmetrical, asymmetric, detorcing.
  3. Common restorative.

A complex of symmetrical exercises strengthens weakened muscles on the side of the bulge and reduces muscular contractures on the side of the concavity. This normalizes the muscular strength of the spinal column.

Asymmetric exercises are used to correct curvature. They are selected individually for each patient. Such exercises train stretched and weakened muscles.

Asymmetric exercises should be performed strictly with the instructor. Improper performance can trigger disease progression.

General restorative complex for thoracolumbar scoliosis includes exercises for balance, correction of movement, stretching and relaxation. They can be performed with objects: gymnastic stick, ball, mace, dumbbells, skipping ropes.

Rapid progression of pathological processes in scoliosis is a prerequisite for the appointment of surgical treatment. The operations allow fixing the spine in the maximum correction position. However, surgical treatment does not completely eliminate the deformity.
