The name of this pathology is derived from the Latin word "lumbus", which in Russian translates as "loin".A sharp pain in this part of the body in modern medicine is called lumbago. In the common parlance this syndrome is also referred to as a lumbago, as it is characterized by a sudden, intolerable pain that occurs during a variety of movements, and with increased load on the lower back is greatly enhanced.
It should be noted that due to the erectness, the load on the human spine is already high enough. Therefore, soreness in the lower back is often called a payoff for such a course of development of the human race.
The statistics clearly indicate a predominant defeat of the disease in males after thirty years. However, official sources do not indicate a clear sex and age binding, while noting the uniformity of the disease development among the entire world population. The disease is most common in children.
Causes of lumbago
Lumbago is a complex of symptoms that characterize a number of pathological changes in the body. In most cases, the sudden appearance of compressive pain in the lumbar region is associated with excessive physical exertion and / or a long time in an uncomfortable position.
Classical examples of the appearance of lumbago can be considered the weeding of beds, snow cleaning, etc. In this case, the forward slope occurs simultaneously with the torso turning to the side. As a consequence, it can be confidently asserted that in the vast majority of cases, the causes of lumbago are hidden among local pathologies:
- Sciatica or pinching of the roots of the spinal nerves;
- Radiculitis or sciatica;
- Intervertebral disc and ligament damage;
- Displacement or prolapse of the vertebra of the lumbar region, almost always combined with sciatica;
- Lumbar myositis;
- Sprains and tears of long back muscles.
All of the above factors can also be called the reasons for the development of the primary lumbago. Of no small importance in the occurrence of this pathology is the extra weight of a person, which significantly increases the burden on all parts of the spine. To the jamming of the nerve roots and displacement of the vertebrae during physical work also leads to a sedentary lifestyle.
Acute back pain in the lumbar region
In addition, the pathologies of the internal organs can also cause severe back pain and cause the secondary lumbago syndrome to develop in the future. As a rule, all diseases of the pelvic organs or kidneys are related to such diseases.
Special caution in the presence of lumbago should be shown to women, because this syndrome is often only the first signal, indicating the development of tumor and inflammatory processes in the ovaries or uterus. At the first suspicions on ljumbago the woman should necessarily address to the doctor-gynecologist.
Symptoms of lumbago
Symptoms of this syndrome are the first and perhaps the most vivid sign is pain. And what is characteristic of it is the way the patients describe it: a shooting, as if squeezing a damaged part of the spine into a vice.
The second most important feature is considered to be excessive muscle tension in the lumbar region and back. It is for this reason that a sick person often has to change the position of his body to a forced one( in which the pain begins to subside).This is explained by the fact that the roots of the spinal nerves are infringed, accompanied by the appearance of severe pain.
Pain sensations are of a peculiar nature: they are most often shooting and can last for several hours;then they gradually weaken and cease altogether. But this does not speak at all of the person's recovery, since with any sharp sloppy movement the pain will again make itself felt.
The lumbago syndrome in most cases is manifested after a long stay of a person in the same posture, or after a previous illness( viral, bacterial).Often, even after a slight hypothermia.
Symptomatic therapy with pain medication does not solve the problem at the root. In order to completely get rid of the disease should eliminate the root cause. More precisely, it is necessary:
- To restore metabolic processes in damaged intervertebral disc tissues;
- Reduce and then completely eliminate the prolapse( protrusion) of the intervertebral discs.
For these purposes, complex therapy using reflex and physiotherapy methods( acupuncture, acupressure, moxotherapy, vacuum therapy), osteopathy and gentle manual therapy are used. Simultaneous use of all these methods in the treatment of sciatica, lumbago and other types of complications of osteochondrosis gives quite good results.
There are cases when the cause of lumbago becomes the patient's overweight. Then, after setting an accurate diagnosis, treatment, among other things, includes adherence to an individually selected diet.
If lumbago is only one of the manifestations of a more severe disease, perhaps even surgical treatment. But in all cases, the obligatory moments in the treatment of this syndrome is therapeutic exercise.
